The only thing it locks in is your basic noob starting weapon.
So, decide how you want to play. Some examples would be:
- Melee Two-Handed, or Melee Sword & Shield
- Ranged with a Bow or Crossbow
- Mage damage dealer using Poison, Oil and Fire
- Healer mage with Water and Air Magic who also does lots of damage
- Dual Dagger using Rogue
- Mage Summoner
- Necromancer Mage who focuses on Physical Damage
Then pick a class that has a starter weapon you are ok with. But then the important part, go through all the Attributes, Skills and Talents and read the tooltips and decide which ones will best help you with your desired play style.
If you don't take the time to learn the details before jumping in, you will have a rough time. This is not a game where "figuring it out as I go along" is a good idea. It generally leads to frustration.
Discussing and imagining clever builds is what I most enjoy about the game. Its why I hang around the forum here even though I haven't played in months. In all that time, the best suggestion I can give to any player considering what build to take...
Don't build a character. Build a team.
It doesn't matter how effectively a character performs individually if they don't fit into your team. Play to each other's strengths and consider who will go first and how the next character can play off what the first one did.
