Doesn't really matter, as you will get allies to cover whatever you pick. Though an undead with thievery will allow slightly more bonuses at the start

It is not that kind of game. The class name you pick does not lock you into anything. Any class you pick can be made to start out with the default setup of any other class.

The only thing it locks in is your basic noob starting weapon.

So, decide how you want to play. Some examples would be:

- Melee Two-Handed, or Melee Sword & Shield
- Ranged with a Bow or Crossbow
- Mage damage dealer using Poison, Oil and Fire
- Healer mage with Water and Air Magic who also does lots of damage
- Dual Dagger using Rogue
- Mage Summoner
- Necromancer Mage who focuses on Physical Damage

Then pick a class that has a starter weapon you are ok with. But then the important part, go through all the Attributes, Skills and Talents and read the tooltips and decide which ones will best help you with your desired play style.

If you don't take the time to learn the details before jumping in, you will have a rough time. This is not a game where "figuring it out as I go along" is a good idea. It generally leads to frustration.

As said above, the "classes" are just build presets. You can go through the tabs and change everything about your starting build with any preset chosen, the presets are just to give you a quick start if you don't want to fiddle with that sort of thing right away. As such, it doesn't really matter what you pick as it only locks in something like 10% or less of your stats for the playthrough, and after a bit of story progression you gain the ability to fully respec any character any time anyway. Look through the different abilities and find something you like, or just click a preset you think looks cool and go from there, you should be fine as long as you think critically and all that.

Your class doesn't matter. Its the class you pick as well as those of your allies that matters. You can be whatever you like, but if you pair it with others that don't synergize, it can make things harder. Like taking a warrior, rogue and archer but only one mage. Your mage won't keep up in damage and will struggle to do much. Pair your fire mage with an ice mage and you'll disrupt your own freezes and struggle to keep things on fire. Mages work best with a near identical copy of themselves.

Discussing and imagining clever builds is what I most enjoy about the game. Its why I hang around the forum here even though I haven't played in months. In all that time, the best suggestion I can give to any player considering what build to take...

Don't build a character. Build a team.

It doesn't matter how effectively a character performs individually if they don't fit into your team. Play to each other's strengths and consider who will go first and how the next character can play off what the first one did.
