how do I use my alternate weapon?
I tried looking at the controls list but it's pretty damn long

If you're running Wand/knife then you'll attack with your main-hand, not off-hand regardless of the order (if it's Melee>Ranged or Ranged>Melee)
If you were running Wand/Wand then you'd attack with both and the same if it was Knife/knife, sword/sword, etc.
As far as I know, you can't do Melee>ranged equip and expect both to attack due to engine limitations. You're really only equipping it for the stats at that point.

also where did my ability to sucker punch things go?
it's not on my toolbar any more
Maybe SP was a skill from a weapon you unequipped.
Can't you equip other weapons to your hotbar?
I think you need a free hand to use sucker punch, which means you can't be duel wielding, or using a two hander. I could be wrong though.

By alternate weapon, do you mean duel wield?

oh that explains it

and by alternate I mean I have like a knife in one hand and a wand in another but I'm only attacking with the knife

Never heard of any one running knife and wand, so I don't know how that would work. I know with most duel wield weapons, when you click attack, you attack with both. In the case of a wand and knife though, I'm assuming you're going to only attack with your main weapon. Not 100% on this though, most people don't run both a knife and a wand, since they both scale off of different stats.

good to know
Sucker punch and flurry are unlisted weapon skills. Took me awhile to realize that dual wielding daggers was where I got my flurry skill.. at first I thought it was inherent to my class choice (which actually gives you nothing). Sucker punch comes from having en empty off-hand slot.
You will probably want both hands full no matter what class you play. However you can remove your weapons mid fight for an easy-to-access knockdown regardless of the characters class.
Their is a talent that compliments grenade throwing when you have a free hand but it's a waste.
