Nobody in Driftwood is essential. Only Tarquin, Malady, a couple NPCs in Paradise Downs, and Gareth have any particular role beyond Act 2.

NPCs without armor dont give EXP though

Basically, anyone who ends up on the ship you’ll probably want to keep. If you want to massacre driftwood... well... you’re going to be a God right? Might as well practice smiting people now. A buddy and I murdered half of Arx with the deathfog crates and barrels we collected there. A couple NPCs also died to it that weren’t intended. Queen Justinia for instance just sprinted headfirst into deathfog without any provocation. We finished all of her quest too, right when we were done she ran right into it and died.

The devs said part of the reason you have the ability to see dead is so there is the freedom to kill anyone. So no matter what, even if by chance you do kill an essential NPC, you can still complete quests, as long as you talk to them before consuming them for some source.
