Maol gone missing?

So I keep going back to the spot I met Maol in Fort Joy and he's not there anymore. Does he go somewhere else?

Actually, I ended up finding him. He was huge on a huge rock in the middle of nowhere nearby. Explains why I could hear him, but not see him.

If combat happened nearby, some NPCs will run off and stay there.
