Avoiding the black cat
Has anyone managed to avoid the black cat or is it programmed to always attach itself to you. I want to sneak into town and pick up Ifan so as to have the teleport pet skill on a ranger. I want to play summoner, so the cat is totally wasted as it cancels out your incarnate.

If you've managed to get out of Fort Joy, speak to the cat and, in essence, free him. He will then become available as a summon, but will no longer be trailing you.

you don't use the cat for combat. it's good for teleportation, sort of.

I tried to avoid it by taking other paths, it always appeared to show up and follow no matter what I tried.

I spent all of Act I wondering what the hell that cat was doing. So....... what the hell was the cat doing?

It didn't seem to affect my game play at all.

Only thing I can think of is to recruit the prince, the cat generally follows him. Remember that you can set any companion to any role, Ifan does not have to be your ranger.

If you escape Fort Joy with it alive, it will become a summonable companion. It's damage is semi-decent early on but it's real value is it's ability to swap places with it's master which can be very useful. Try using it out of combat too, to get to hard to reach locations.

My cat got shot by an archer standing on a ledge in Fort joy 5 minutes after I entered the place.

I was wanting to only have one companion (not red prince) so it seems to be impossible to attach it to Ifan. Looks like I shall have to start a new game and play the ranger myself.

The reason I want the cat on the ranger is to give an extra positioning teleport in addition to tactical retreat, especially as some enemies like to teleport you back down after you get to your high ground.

Actualy, i consider killing an ennemy with the cat as a humiliating finisher. hehe

Might be worth just taking the required points in scoundrel and getting cloak and dagger as a teleport. Alternatively you can have nether swap and swap yourself with the cat that way, even if you're not it's master. Given that warfare also buffs archer damage (it buffs all physical damage) you could also pick up Phoenix dive and use that. Spread your wings from the polymorph tree also does this well, will cost you 2AP to cast, but you can fly for 1AP each turn after until the effect wears off.

That's interesting, good info.

What about the voidling chicken in act 2? Does he become a summon too?

I got sick of him following me around, so I introduced him to Prince's two handed mace. I got quest exp.

there's a quest to find he's "fahza". do it, it is worth it.

Bear in mind too, all of those work as reposition abilities, but they all come with other benefits. Phoenix dive for instance, requires warfare which boosts ALL physical damage, so abilities such as tenticle lash or mosquito swarm also get the boost. It also creates a ring of fire that can be used with elemental arrowheads for that extra magic damage. Obviously it can also set off poison or oil, but in addition, after the fire goes out you get a ring of smoke you can utilize to break line of sight from other range attackers and get some quiet time to buff or heal.

Alternatively, spread your wings is a strong option. The points in polymorph give you more attribute points to raise finesse, memory, wits or whatever else you might need and, while it takes two AP to fly the first time, you can fly each turn for only one AP as long as the ability is active. It also lets you float over surface elements so that pesky pool of electric water can't stun you. Not to mention the outside of combat uses...

The cat is still useful in its own way, but not getting him shouldn't be too significant if you pick up some other abilities. The wings can also be obtained free through elven flesh eating just after leaving fort joy and hitting the swamps. (Just have to be an elf).

Edit: another good point is the scoundrel talent that allows you a free AP of movement can be invaluable if you choose cloak and dagger as your reposition. Or warfares execution talent for two AP awarded after a kill once per turn.
