Afterwards you can still pick, random, non-origin characters. But I'm honestly not sure why they even put that in, in case you screw up I guess?
You can recruit other custom characters anytime though the sargeant lady, this is because your companions can actualy leave you if their aproval ratting goes too low, they can even die on the story depending on what you choose to do, or not do.
And as for acts, its because you'll change locations and wont be able to go back to the previous locations once you move on Act 1-fort joy Act 2- Reaper's coast Act 3-Nameless island(or something) act 4- Arx.
Yeah, you reached driftwood, you are on act 2. Thats just the name of the vilage tho.
