I thought like you, until i killed Gareth and started talking with alexander, he is a pure lunatic that believes only in his own twisted way of thinking.

Believe me when i say this, Gareth is a angel compared to Alexander.

well thats for your playthrough and the good thing about the game is everyone has their own interpretation. For me, all i see is he does what is needed greater good. He sees im the better one to ascend and allied with me. For me, Alexander had foresight, he sees thing and make hard decisions. Gareth is just mindless and goes around seeing things in black and white in a grey world. He doesnt see reasons.

KILL THEM ALL! Agree to help Alexander with Ifan away from the region. Then go into the region with Ifan and let him have his revenge. Rob the vendors in the area 4 times then Nuke the Tree cuz the elf clan is crazy!

Its not related to the check on the spot as far as I know. Its related to Garreth in act 2. If you persuaded him in act two to back down or whatever, he'll have the time to reconcile over the course of the rest of the act. If you put him on the path of revenge instead, or simply don't interact with him, he'll be unstoppable in act 3, leading to a guaranteed attack.
