So you say it is not possible to change the race and sex of the mercenaries? That's bad. If so, I don't see a way to get a knight human mercenary of your wish other than how you described.
What does the blue mirror do and where is it located?
I suppose the method of hiring any human male of any class and simply speccing him to be a knight and giving him the skill books isn't the worst idea, I just find it to be a strange system. For an RPG with such strong immersion etc it seems pretty obvious to me a lot of player, myself included, would rather have a party full of their own creations rather than presets.
Having a custom party was one of the best features of Pillars of Eternity, and whilst I much prefer this game, they really should have copied it. Hopefully there is another merc vendor and someone will know where.
Really? That's a pretty major flaw if that's the case. Hopefully it can be addressed in the future. Like, if I want to design a human male Knight companion, the best way to do that simply can't be to take another human male merc and have to edit him to be a Knight and buy him the skill books.
Strange design decision by the devs. Surely would have been easier to allow the creation of companions at will. Along with the very obvious mechanic that every game should have, of allowing you to edit character at any time from the menu.
