Join games with your own character?
Can you join a players game with your own character? or are you forced to make new ones through the multiplayer menu? If so can you join someonelses multiplayer game with your multiplayer character? How does it works exactly?

Not unless you started the game with them.

are you forced to make new ones through the multiplayer menu?
No, you are stuck with controlling one of their existing party unless you started the game with them.

See above.

How does it works exactly?
You can only use a custom character if you join the host when they are creating their character. Otherwise you are stuck with one (or more) of their existing party.

Wow this sucks...

The multiplayer is meant to be a co-op through the entire game (to be played in its entirety) , not a drop in/out.(like borderlands)

Get a friend (or three) and start a game and play that game with ONLY them (maintain your own solo save for personal use)

Trying to do the drop in/out just isn't worth it and the game just isn't designed for that.

Yeah, it does suck. There are ways to fix that too, but we shall have to see what the devs come up with.

Here's what could be done...

Firstly, you as a host would have the option of opening up your games in this manner - possibly via a checkbox on the "Connectivity" screen where you invite players. As such, everyone who doesn't want the feature doesn't have to use it. You could even have a "level difference" slider to prevent characters more than 1+ levels joining to retain balance.

Secondly, if the game you are joining is open to this, all that would need to be done is to temporarily replace one of the existing party members (the ones normally controlled by joining players) with the character of the joining player.

Lastly, quests would remain as they were - the host controls them so nothing needs to be changed at all. The joining character would be playing in the hosts game with whatever quests they are currently running... just as it would be if they joined in the existing manner. As such you wouldn;t even have to worry about story progress or quests getting messed up at all. If the developers did find a way to do some form of "quest-syncing" then great, but the way described here would not require them to do that.

...it's really not rocket science. A system like NWN would be ideal, where you have a "vault" where all your characters are kept. I mean jeez, even Sword Coast Legends got that right.

The game is simply not designed for moving characters around between different campaigns.

It needs to be. Especially where custom campaigns / modules are concerned. And, as I said above, it isn't impossible and could be done if the devs wanted to.

It also kills replayability big time. Making new characters everytime is just no.

Love people that feel the need to apple polish, and think that because they don't need it, it shouldn't be available.

Amen to that. This is the single biggest issue stopping me and my group from custom modules/campaigns.

Well, you can play any of the Diablos, Torchlight, Borderlands and multiple other games to get what you're looking for. There are VERY few games that do it this way and some of us actually see it as a positive.

It's really about personal preferences, but the bottomline is that DOS2 doesn't try to be everything to everyone. In this case, it is aiming less wide, but deep.

That is such a non-answer. You effectively are saying that because the game doesn't have this feature, that it's a positive - which is a pile of crap. The premise of creating your own adventure, just like PnP is pointless when features like this do not exist. You can't persist and roleplay a character across adventures. Games like NWN 1 and 2 - and even the lackluster SCL managed to do it. It is possible (see my earlier suggestion).

love it when people who clearly arnt fans of something feel the need to force mechiancs of other genres into one that isnt ment to have it thus killing the intent of the game

Right-o. I wonder what that makes you then. If a game fails to live up to its lofty advertisements in a particular area - pointing out a required feature that should be in the game now leads to this kind of drivel.

Like a fine wine, this thread gets better with age... or perhaps not.
