Is persuasion necessary on the main character?
Or is that something you can pass off to secondary characters in party? Is there key dialogue that forces focus onto your main?

Just generally useful to have it on your main character, since he or she will be interacting with certain people and characters that the other party members will not. Also, if your main character ever gets seperated from the main party for any reason (mild spoiler) and has a conversation, you never know when you might have a persuation chance that he would fail without points in it. Of course you could just put the points on anoher character, but then you'd have to do all your talking through them just in case that particular conversation has a persuasion roll.

generally want it for your main character since they will usually encounter the dialogue events. you can always 'pass it off' to another, but you will generally need to make sure you are quick saving all the time so you can reload to pre-event dialogue.

Only if you want to persuade things.

I find that even though I initiate conversations with my main, it's my other guy who actually ends up doing the talking a lot of the time.

It's like the npc just randomly chooses who they feel like talking to.

if you want to avoid fights to get xp and then kill them anyway to get more xp then i would get persuasion.

they pick whoever is closest to them if THEY initiate the dialog, which can be an issue if they happen to be some sort of ambush so they jump you as you pass (now your backline is closer...)

I'd say it's best to put it on the main character. You'll never know when the persuasion dialogs start and, well, after all your main character is YOUR character by nature. You typically want to do the talking rather than going "Hmm... that person looks like an important person... Red Prince, go talk to them!"
Now if it was multiplayer I'd say nah it's not important.

That's not what's happening, as I said I'm initiating the convo on my main, so clearly my companion isn't the closest person.

It's about 50/50 who the npc will actually talk to.

I am playing 2 custom characters though, so that may have something to do with it.
remember that if you cant talk thru, you always can fight thru

Is Persuasion necessary at all on anyone? Like, will I miss any quests or loot if I do - or lose significant amount of XP?

Well its kinda important for persuading your companions if you dont wanna fight them for the source during endgame.

I guess that depends how the situation works, like if you persuade your way out without a fight, then you won't get XP from fight. Sometimes you can persuade for getting more reward

Im currently playing my 2nd play through and the only time my main is not targetted in conversation is if she isnt the closest or the NPC targets one of my party members because its scripted to do so. Not sure why you are experiencing something different.
