This was before Divinity OS 2, but you can probably figure that one out from there.
Basically, - Divine Divinity - Beyond Divinity- Divinity II - The Dragon Knight Saga (Developer's Cut) should be order (optimally) before or after D:OS 1 + 2
Otherwise just pick what style of game you want to play first, as they differ, some of them.
The first three games have some continuity re: Divine / Damian.
Commander can be played whenever it is so different. DOS 1 is not really related either.
I do think playing the older ones first is a good idea, but for different reasons, namely because of how the Divine is portrayed. DOS 2 could totally wreck the first game, from an RP standpoint.
I wouldn't worry about the jarring gameplay change though...one would have that going from Witcher 3 (random example) to an old game. The worst part is going from turn-based to real-time :D
I played the other games and even though they are not bad, they are not great either - and a different genre than D:OS1+2.
They're a different sub-genre, at least the first two. It's still a crpg. Divinity 2 is ARPG so yeah, I'll give ya that one. (It's a decent game though).
But the thing is this has come up prior and several people listed Divine Divinity above this game even. There is no right/wrong answer there but to just say not to play a game is kind of silly when the reasoning is it's not the same.
If one likes old-school rpgs (i.e. dungeon crawlers / diablo-style-sorta stuff there is little to not like about it. The story is decent and the characters pretty cool. Much of the Source, another take on it, is within the first story, too.
I'm pretty sure Larian's loyal fanbase began with these games for a reason, that being they are good -- aged, but good.
P.S. Often you can get the old games, DD at least, for a couple bucks on GoG if not here.
Only reason I can imagine somebody might still want to play this, in this day and age, is some form of obsessive completionism or a heapton of nostalgia.
And if you actually played both games before, the only reason you can defend this, is nostalgia. It wasn´t a bad game but nowadays there is nothing remarkable about it
I've played most all games I have wanted to play. I like these games. Nostalgia, let alone "Completionism" has nothing to do with it -- I'd have to go back to the original Zelda/King's Quest for that, or Asteroids/Pong.
That you can't fathom someone else liking something you don't leaves little to discuss, but I did want to clarify that point.
Naw, seriously you might have a point if there was anything redeeming about these games. I haven´t heard a single good feature/argument about em, that are not nostalgia. And the only thing you do is saying my opinion is wrong - maybe it is, maybe it isn´t - however I am really waiting for that ONE special thing, that makes those 2 games actually worth playing. Please, tell me at least one good thing.
