If you are playing classic then this fight should be pretty easy if you have proper equipment/setup. Just load a save game from before the fight and go do other things to try and level up/get gear before coming back. Use skills like thievery/bartering to build economy as that is absolutely necessary in the early stages of tactician.
Game can be unforgiving if your running into situation unprepared.
No, it tells you not to cross him half a dozen times and gives you at least one opportunity to change your mind about opposing him... Gotta pay attention to stuff like that in this game, or else you're going to end up in a lot of situations like this. It does force you sometimes, but this isn't one of those.
There is literally a quick save button. "I haven't saved in ages" is ENTIRELY your fault.
Be sure your party is level 3 too and have some level 3 items on them.
Position before engaging.
Use CC.
Position yourself at the south gate entrance, taking the west side, and then teleport them through one by one: all the range mages / rangers will climb the stairs / high ground just NW (near the cage) of the gate and cannot target you. Just burn turns until you can port the next person through and so on
There's the lesson. Save regularly.
