git gud. If you're playing tactician this will be an extremely tough fight since it is so early on. If you are split party(as in two mages/two fighters) this battle will likely be nearly impossible. There are plenty of ways to get off the island, though, so it doesn't matter too much storywise.

If you are playing classic then this fight should be pretty easy if you have proper equipment/setup. Just load a save game from before the fight and go do other things to try and level up/get gear before coming back. Use skills like thievery/bartering to build economy as that is absolutely necessary in the early stages of tactician.

Thing is always make sure you are prepared before picking fights. Don't think theres much you can do at this stage but load a save and try to find better gear or try to place yourself better when triggering the fight. And exploit being able to position during dialogue.

Game can be unforgiving if your running into situation unprepared.

You can make that Archer Girl actually help you against griff and his people (I forgot her name), the one that fall in love with you and etc..

And it is very clear that doing anything that angers griff will cause a fight. Theres consequences to choices in this games... and they can get brutal if not ready for it.

No, it tells you not to cross him half a dozen times and gives you at least one opportunity to change your mind about opposing him... Gotta pay attention to stuff like that in this game, or else you're going to end up in a lot of situations like this. It does force you sometimes, but this isn't one of those.

There is literally a quick save button. "I haven't saved in ages" is ENTIRELY your fault.

He and his gang are all level 3.
Be sure your party is level 3 too and have some level 3 items on them.
Position before engaging.
Use CC.

Its not easy being a hero. Thats why you get the tag for it.

This fight is actually easy if you prepare correctly:

Position yourself at the south gate entrance, taking the west side, and then teleport them through one by one: all the range mages / rangers will climb the stairs / high ground just NW (near the cage) of the gate and cannot target you. Just burn turns until you can port the next person through and so on

I cheesed this fight so hard. Before starting I positioned a load of barrels and other crap at the bottome of both staircases, I left three of my party at the top, near Buttter, and sent the other down to speak to Griff. Once the fight started, the member at the bottom quaffed an invisibility potion. Griff and the others at the bottom had to go the long way to get to my party, alllowing me to fight small groups at a time.

There's the lesson. Save regularly.

You can turn in Stingtail and still save him. So there is a win win direction to go. Just turn him in..Talk to the prisoner..and then go wait where Stingtail is to fight the assasin Griff sends.
