Joining a game in progress?

If my friends are already in a game and I havn't played in the session they are in, Can I make a character and join them? or do you have to have joined the game from the very start to be able to do that?

You can't join midgame and create your own character. But if he got a companion you can join and control them and change the character to your needs in Act II on the Lady Vengeneance

you dont have to change the character in act 2, they can just hire a new one from the mercenary that is completely to your likeing...
