So obviously this might not be the same thing, but I've encountered something similar, although the reasoning behind it in my case is rather obvious. When you aren't directly controlling a character, they simply follow you and try to avoid environmental hazards such as fire, poison etc. an the big thing to take note of here is that unlike when you point and click for a character to go somewhere, they wwon't *force* their way through fire and such. They stay and wait for it to either be put out or for you to control them and force them over it if they can't path around it without running too far.

The pathfinding gets messed up around trap and surface hazard locations, and around ladders. Sometimes one character will get hung up, and have to be moved before the others can follow.

I'm having the same issue, really wish you could just make them ignore surfaces and traps. As well as fix the damn pathfinding

Just f1, click, f2, click, f3, click, f4, click. Takes 2 seconds.

If there's a trap surface you must run through, double click.
If a character is not following you AT ALL, you may not be linked in 'group' with them.
To link a group, grab their icon on the top left, and drag it beneath (or above) the person you'd like them to follow. You can use this to split up into groups, or tell a member to stay put. To go back to wherever someone who seems to have gotten lost is, simply double click the icon for them-- It will automatically find them and load in the area they are. This lets you actually fight several battles at once if you so see fit, or even set up an ambush.

Line formation might help, then they all follow the same path.
