I have no idea what drawbridge you are talking about to be honest, is it the one guarded by magisters ? As long as the cat can follow you if you bring him far enough from Fort Joy it will automatically happen. If he can't follow you using your way because of a ladder or something just take another path. In any case it's kinda recommended to be able to take all paths because that means you kill more people, get more good items and more xp. (possible not to but still better).
Also the cat is cute and all but at the end of the day he is quite useless and take a memory slot on top of that so meh. I used to be a big defender of that cat but seriously a regular mobility spell is 10x better
Long story short, the cat seems pretty underwhelming unless it is used for some quest later on.
