Yes he does. I choosed the boat escape, once arrived at the bridge where zaleska stands you can go to the fort aprocheing from the river over the docks, you ll see the magisters attacking him and when you rush in you can join the fight. I saved his butt this way but after the fight he starts running past the bridge and if you follow him those 4 skelleton warriors will stop you which you have to fight first, after that fight you can still see the red flag marker of garwin somewhere near the demon and there you can loot him. so better let him die anyways.
