Mind, when you get the collar off, it still won't be a lot of source magic you have at your disposal. As to what your Source magic does, you did check it out when you created your character, correct? Because it's different for each of the Origins character, and different again if you design a character of your own.
For sourcerers that have Source Vampirism, collecting Source is a breeze for them, that's why they're considered the most dangerous ones, since they can out of nowhere just use a Source spell and nuke everyone like the old woman in the ship when you start the game, these sourcerers are also the ones that ends up attracting a horde of Voidwokens to them.
Yes, I know. But I wasn't going to give it all away like that. ;) I just hinted at it, as well as the additrional power, and suggested checking out the lore. Seems a bit of a secret to me, though of course, each to their own. :)
I've never read an actual source (originating point) for normal magic in the lands. It's always been there, even as far back as the Age of the Dragon Commander, though civilization then had access to marvelous technologies (mostly steampunk stuff) that have long since vanished from the world. We might hazard a guess that the rise of vast magics was in part a reaction to this, by powers looking for new methods of dominating the world. Chaos in particular might be involved, since it actively seeks new worshipers.
You have my sympathies. My sister, her husband and son were living with friends for the better part of the work, since they were without power, too.
