How can I open the magic locked chests in the doctor's basement?

I just killed him and I can't find out how to open these chests..

There is a hint - what spells to use - near stairs.
lighting,fire,rain

You can also just straight up lockpick them

This is probably another of the hundred of bugs, but just right click -> lockpick them if you want. Magic loses to lockpicks, apparently.

I just cast blood rain on them.

the magic doesnt seem to work, i dont understand what the symbol represents

i somehow unlocked all the display cases except 1 (containing the polymorph master's armor)

i used Fireball (fire), Rain (water), Hail Strike (ice), Shocking Touch (electric), and Rain of Blood (blood)

You can unlock everything besides the one containing the polymorphs gear by casting blood rain.

The last one I'm still not sure how to unlock.

You can only get one of the two sets. If you unlock one the other is permalocking. Blood rain works on both just be careful where you cast it

There is a book for it pre made in High Judge Orivand's chambers inside Fort Joy, and the book itself can be crafted by combining a hydro book with a necro book as long as neither book has a skill that requires source to use.

i am in the last area of the game so i caint go find one. i am in arx... and i need raining blood to get past the last puzzle... funny thing is though i cant find a blank necro book to combine them to make one...

edit...you can combine necro and hyrdo skill books... they dont need to be black... they just have to be of the same lvl...

Not even the same level - any two Non-Source skill books from Necro and Hydro will make Blood Rain. If one of them is a Source skill it makes Blood Storm instead. More powerful, but more costly as well.

You also do not need it for that puzzle. You just need to make blood appear. The most basic way is to just smack a teammate with a sword while standing on or near that grate.

So, to make this clear, in the Definitive edition you can no longer lockpick the displays that are magically locked. There are two displays that are connected and others are single. You can overload them all one by one with a rain spell, BUT only one of the two connected to each other. If you unlock one, the other locks itself for good. Its random which of those two gets overloaded and open, so you might try to reload your game to get the one you really need. Good luck!
