Hey, is there any hidden secret I didnt find or how to you escort Higba out of the city without either killing all magisters or him turning against you?

Maybe because I'm in Definitive, but I was unable to waypoint or use pyramids to get him to safety - the party goes on without him and he tries to follow on foot.
Instead I took a party member with Teleport and put him on the tower west of where Higba is hiding, near the dwarf Kannox and Magister Benson (who was bugged for me maybe? he was behind 3 barrels and not walking around). I could walk Higba over to within sight of the tower without even sneaking. I then teleported him clear to the far shore, near the guy who lost his wedding ring, which solved the quest without harming Magisters.

Teleport and Waypoints no longer work with DE

I don't know why they changed it. Took me awhile to find this out having done the stuff that doesn't work.

Teleportation does work.
I used sneak and avoided detection. Just takes some timing and effort. But usually there is some way to cheese it, like teleporting.

I think they nerfed cheesing this quest
For some reason, I am completely unable to actually talk with the magister (Benson) and it's driving me bonkers. Has anyone else had this issue?

Ideally, I'd like to do this without killing any magisters myself to avoid a bigger fighting mess. If there's one thing I LOATHE about this game, it's that NPCs don't stop walking when you click on them...

Pretty sure it's impossible to avoid combat, unless you've already killed the magisters that are scripted to come to you. I tried a dozen different ways but there seems to be absolutely no way to avoid these fights. On the bright side it's like 2 fights with 1 magister only.

To avoid all combat with this quest, use the speech options of wondering if he's the one the magisters are looking for. Then laugh at his plight saying you cant wait to see his face when magisters pull him out of the barrel. He will tell you that they would regret that because he has a bomb. After that tell him you will be right back and tell the magisters where he is, but explain that he has a bomb. They will ask you to escort him out of town and kill him. They will pretend he's not the one you're looking for as you lead him out.

i used pyramid, easiest way
Didn't work for me in the Definitive Edition. I split my party and started conversations with the guards well away from my path to clear the way to the west across the river. Worked great,

I had zero issue with this. Just had him follow me due west to the river bank, tossed a pyramid over and crossed that way. It took like 30 seconds. Really weird how many people seem to have a problem with this.

But can you actually rescue him that way, or does the game force you into combat with him? I've had some bad experience with quests like this, where I tried to help someone but in the end I wasn't able to pick the decision to actually help them because of previous actions.

As for rescuing, I hear the pyramid trick no longer works in the DE. I just escorted him to the west and across the river. Took out one nosy magister who got too close, but otherwise no problems.

I used the teleportation spell on him. No problems at all.
