Are Staffs worth it?
I've been finding that dual wands seem better, plus you get place more runes

having Shields up certainly does help if you find yourself being targetted a lot.

Pretty much.

Offhand has a damage decrease if I remember?

I found a staff was better than using wands. Looks more aesthetic to me as well.
Staff is useless compared to DW or wand+shield.

If you are making a physical contact caster a staff is good, otherwise nope.
Usually such a caster would have Venom Coating, Fire Brand, Decaying Touch & a mobility ability from Polymorph. The damage can become quite substantial in that case and due to the majority of points being necromancy you will heal back to full as long as u do not die.

tried it a bit but dunno how viable it is in actual hard fights.
Staves i think are for melee focused characters who want to do magic damage instead of physical since the ranged bolt isnt that great BUT trhe melee damage is pretty solid. I find if i am in melee the staff is great if not i'd rather have a wand and shield.

Wand's are indeed often far far superior, the only exception being what build you have. Staff's should often grant an ability like swords and such do but instead be a spell...

Yeah staff is bad man. I used staff on red prince as a cleric/pyro man it was useless.
I am not far just escaped from fort killed every magister. Currently I have two mages both dual welding wands. It takes magic armour really quickly and if I get hit to hard at some point I will just switch to wand+shield

With how OP gaining armor from shields is, I can't really see a reason to go staff unless you're playing some kind of niche battlemage build with crit and opportunity strikes or something.

I am playing just such a niche battlemage and having a pretty good time of it - staff seems great for battle mages because you can use warfare abilities that require a melee weapon but you still retain your staff of magnus ability etc. Putting some into two-handed so I can swtich between staff/great sword I reckon.
