Please help with download optimization
I have been downloading this game for 6 hours and I am currently at 8%. Is there anything I can do to optimize my computer to download faster without interrupting the current download? I am running Windows 10 on a Core i.5 vPro Intel Inside and my Wi-Fi speed is 54.0 Mbps and the network is connected using an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205. My computer has 2.50 GHz processing speed with 6 GB of ram with a 64-bit operating system. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

And how fast is your internet connection ? Do you share it with other users ?

I am using a private Wi-Fi network with the following protocals:

Protocol: 802.11g
Security type: WPA2-Personal
Network band: 2.4 GHz
Network channel: 10
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Description: Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205
Driver version: 15.16.0.2

No, I am not sharing it with other users.

I'm assuming that you're downloading from Steam, rather than GoG. It may be that there are so many other people downloading this and other games that it is slower for everyone.

You may be able to get more speed by plugging into your router or modem directly, rather than via wifi, at least until you've finished the download.

You won't lose what you've downloaded so far.

Just plug the cable directly into the computer. This seems like a wifi problem.
I always download at full download speed from Steam

Okay, thanks for the input. Yes, I'm thinking it's a Wi-Fi issue as well. I actually am sharing the wi-fi network with two other family members (smart phones, netflix, amazon prime) so directly plugging in the cable isn't really an option for me - also, I've never done it before and don't know how...lol (Guess, I'll just have to be patient and wait another 24-48 hours to play the game..... sitting at 9% now.... My average download speed on Steam seems to be hovering between 150-250 KB/s (says I have 1 day and 8 hours remaining.....)

Tried resetting the router, but that doesn't seem to help. Still hovering between 100-250 KB/s download speed. Made it to 21% complete. Says I have between 18 hours - 3 days remaining...depending on the current download speed.......at least I have plenty of time to read these discussion posts and think about what character I want to create. Also, I plan on playing single player mode, so hopefully the slow Wi-Fi won't affect my gameplay once everything has finished downloading.....

The only thing that is going to make any real difference is your internet speed provided by your IP. That is almost totallly what is going to determine your download speed. You may however have an issue but it wouldn't be a case of optimization but fixing what is broken. 200KB/s is a terrible speed however. Even the least expensive IPs give you 1.5 MB second or 7 times that fast.

Also wi fi is not real dependable . It is wireless. It is dependent on distance from the router. How many people are using it at once and I myself don't like using it. Anytime anybody in our household uses wifi is screws up the wired internet connection for eveybody else. Usually taking half the bandwith or more just for 1 user. 3 wired connection on the internet..no issues. Negligible bandwith used by any one person. Add 1 wifi to the mix. Download speed drops to around 150kb sec for everybody.

Your wi fi will never go as fast or reliable as a direct LAN connection. Now you said you don't know how to do it.

Look at the back of your router. You'll see (probably) a large telephone like cable plugged into the back of it. It's called a LAN cable. It will (probably) have a green light flashing above it.

You will (hopefully) also see at least four more empty ports on the back that look exactly like the one with the cable plugged into it. Those are outgoing LAN ports. If you take a LAN cable and plug into one of these ports and plug the other end into your PC's LAN port, you will have a direct connection (hopefully). This method also lets you retain wifi to your other devices.

Windows should recognize it quickly and set it up with no problems. The only problem I could see happening is Windows might try to stay connected to the Wifi instead of using the LAN. Disconnecting the Wifi through the taskbar icon will fix this. A restart probably would too.

Another solution is taking the cable that is already plugged into your router and plugging that cable into your PC. Doing so would be a direct connection, but also cut off wifi to the rest of your devices.

Also realize you're missing out on the speeds you paid for by only using wifi. For example, you might be paying for an 3 Gbit connection, but the wifi on your router will only go half that speed. Upgrading to higher speeds will never do you any good at all. You need a LAN cable to use every bit of your connection.

This is a very good idea and will likely change your download time into anywhere from 2 to 10 hours depending on your Internet speed.

Thank you for for the feedback and technical advice. I actually just finished doing this before I read this post...lol. I went to the computer store and had it all explained to me earlier today. I purchased a long LAN cable that I needed for the connection and plugged it into the router. After rebooting the router and computer, the LAN connection setup perfectly.

My Wi-Fi actually went out completely about 12 hours ago, and I was really upset because I had made it to 24% downloaded (4.5 GB). Now that everything is up and running again, the speed has increased slightly (to between 250-300 KB/s). Hopefully the connection is more reliable now. However, somehow I lost most of what was downloaded and it has restarted me back at 3% downloaded......AAAAHHHH!!!! No idea why this has happened. It says I have about 20 hours remaining to download now. Well, better late than never.......lol

Update: Guess I spoke too soon. After about 10 minutes, my computer and router both froze up. Had to reboot both of them. The router seems hotter than normal. I switched ports and am trying again. We'll see how it goes. I wish I hadn't lost almost 4 GB of downloaded data.....this is crazy. Game better be worth all the trouble of these past few days!!! Gonna probably call the internet company later to ask WTF?!?!?

Might need a refund....feeling angry and sad......
Just had to restart router and computer again....and download started back to 3% again.....not sure WTF is going on.....been trying to download this game for 3 days now......
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Side note: I went to www.gog.com and noticed that the game only costs $28.98 there (about $15 cheaper than on Steam) is there any reason I shouldn't request a refund from Steam and purchase from www.gog.com instead? Do I get more from my Steam purchase (updates, additional DLC, etc....) I am reluctant to go to a different company because all my other Steam purchases worked perfectly well, but I am getting really frustrated by not being able to download this game and am ready to try just about anything at this point......

Update: I stuck with it and after 4 attempts and contacting tech support I finally managed to download the game! It took about 28 hours to download, and I'm super excited to finally play!!!!! :)
