Fade discovered a "veil" made of pure source between the world and the void, wanted to study it but the king said no, fade kept on studying it and conviced the seven to help him convice the king, instead they banished the eternal and the void and ascend has god while fade was imprisoned by the king for an other reason.

Yeah what Bathory said. Fane was an eternal researcher who discovered a celestial body of pure source. Fane petitioned his king to let him research the source further but was denied, so instead he went to the council of the seven. They decided to act on it, and thus they became the seven gods by using the giant well of source. So the "Seven" are basically gods because they consumed the enormous body of source that Fane had discoverd. Fane did not mean for it to be consumed, he even says to use it would be to render it useless and destroy it. He wanted to discover the secrets of the universe by studying it. But the council of the seven had other plans and they basically usurped it.

They waged a war with eternals, for power over the universe. To cement their dominance over the realm, they cast the race into the void so they would have no resistence. Only a few were spared from banishment, Fane and his family. So the eternals are basically extinct save two, maybe three individuals. They were twisted and perverted into the voidwoken from their banishment in the void, and they took revenge on the world by breaking through the veil that seperates life and the void. I cant remember how or why the veil was broken, something about Lucian using deathfog I think.

Ive probably got a few details wrong but thats the long and short of it.

Fane seems like the true main character in this game.

So basically Amadia is lying to you when you first meet her spirit in the hall of echoes as Fane? Cause she claims that it was the king who was secretly draining the veil. If you read your journal update after it, it says that the king wiped out his race (the eternals) and that only those seven remain.

All of the gods are liars. They were in it for power. Hell, they probably intended to try and take over you and the other godwoken once you claimed divinity. That’s probably the significance of the fight at the end of act 3 right before you try to escape through Malady’s beacon.
