Here is the what I have learned. It is important to get a few points into Huntsman 1-2 to begin with and 3 or 5 by the end. No more than 5 is of Huntsman is recomended. I use 1-2 points (usually from gear) in: Scoundrel (Adrenaline & Crit Multiplyer), Necro (life steal), Pyro (buffs including Haste & Peace of Mind), & Poly (Chameleon Cloak to combine with Assasinate skill). The rest goes into Warfare & Ranged Weapon with Warfare being more important than ranged. Why warfare? It increases physical damage and it is multiplicative not additive.
Here is the way the math seems to work. For this example lets use a Hunter with 16 Finesse, 3 Ranged & 3 Warfare and a bow that does 25 damage.
We first apply the increase from Ranged (3 points X 5% Each = 15%) -> 25 damage * 15% = 3.75
25 damage + 3.75 = 28.75 damage
Next we apply the bonus from Warfare (3 Points X 5% Each = 15%)
28.75 damage * 15% = 4.31
28.75 + 4.31 = 33.06
Next we apply the bonus from Finesse (6 X 5% Each = 30%)
33.06 damage * 30% = 9.92
33.06 + 9.92 = 42.98 Damage.
As you can see the more multipliers - the more your damage increase. That is why Warfare is Very important to the Ranger.
Hunter Ability only raises damage IF you have the high ground, but it is another multiplier. In the example above if there are 2 points hunter the damage goes up to 47.28 (another 10% total increase). I just know that in many fights there is no high ground. To take full advantage of this bonus I use 3 movement skills (Tactical Retreat, Cloak & Dagger, & Phoenix Dive).
I hope this helps. Here are my stats currently:
Level 18
11 Ranged
10 Warfare
4 Huntsman
2 Necro
1 Poly
2 Scoundrel
Finesse:52
Con: 16
Memory: 17
Wits: 27
Damage: 985 - 1202
Critical Chance: 61%
Critical Damage: 160%
Accuracy: 105%
When I crit from high ground, the damage is about 2.8K
I hope this helps. Please let me know what your research shows.
Actual Damage = A × {1+(FIN-10)×0.05 + Ranged×0.05}×(1+Warfare×0.05)×{1+(Huntsman+4)×0.05}
WIth FIN52, marginal gain from Ranged is approximately 2.6%(1.6% from additive + less than 1% from crit)
Drop Ranged to minimum and max Warfare. Warfare should be over 14~15.
This is an example of optimal stats for dps ranger around lv 18. You don't invest in Ranged for any reason.
Warfare 15 Huntsman10 Ranged 0(maybe 1~3 from gears)
Test it yourself. Crit from high ground will deal more damage than 2.8K.
Why have 3 movement skills? Often times I find myself needing to move more than 1 time during a battle and wearing a crossbow inhibits normal movement as well as often having to get away from attacks of opportunity when a melee gets in my face. Having just 1 movement for 1 ap was not enough. Also, getting 1 point of Pyro from an item is EASY and not a waste.
I keep testing the damage and that equation is not quite correct or the numbers that show on the character page are incorrect. It looks like there is a BIG bonus for getting Ranged to 10.
Hold on now, your points are valid, but we are not talking about gear here. We are talking about raw points in your skill tree. Like I said, scoundrel is good because it increases your critical multiplier. You can justify going for cloak and dagger skill. I would try and equip items with wits and throw majority points into finesse if we are going to throw gear into the equation.

What kind of test are you talking about? Upload the screenshot if you actually tested it yourself. This is common sense and has been proved many times on Steam or Reddit. Numbers don't lie, so stop spreading false information.
If you just want to dip into Huntsman but not use arrows, then get it to rank 2 for First Aid and Tactical Retreat.
Otherwise Pyrokinetic synergizes well.
