Shapeshifter masks, what are they best used for?
So I just got my first shapeshifter mask, I see I can transform from my current form (Elf) to other ones... but is that permanent, what I'm getting by doing it? Should I just try it out myself and explore or is there something I should know before doing it?

Thanks :)

It's permanent as long as you wear the mask, which takes up the helmet slot. You can use the mask for a lot of things, such as if you weren't an Elf, you could shapeshift into an Elf and eat flesh and you'd get the same benefits as an Elf would, like learning things from the memories of the person. Or if an NPC hates Elfs you could try talking to them as another race, you're pretty much only limited by your imagination.

Crafted shapeshifter mask transformations stay even if you equip a different helmet, btw.

The individual ones do, but Fane's Mask of the Shapeshifter is unequipped and the effects removed (I think).

Fane's mask is basically a multisided helmet so it gets removed if you put on another helmet.

Yes, I was talking about the masks you craft with a source orb and a ripped-off face of that race.

You can use the shapeshifter mask to turn any of your character into an elf, so that this character can eat corpses parts and learn skills through the process (if, ofc you know, from previous playthrough, which gives what and all)

Then you turn back to the original form (mask-granted skill)

My character is an Elf and I have been using the mask to change into Human for the +1 Barter bonus when selling/buying stuff and to reset conversations if I botched up with my character.

In some areas, certain races might not be allowed either. I think the Undertavern for example I can walk around inside as an Elf but cannot seem to enter as an Elf. Though that might have been due to me using the Hero response when trying to persuade the guard.

They are great. You can gain access to all race specific dialogues, and get the special skills for each race like flesh sacrifice or petrifying touch. If you fail a speech check, you can also turn into another form and give it another try, as the person will no longer recognize you, meaning you can use it as a crutch to save yourself in some situations.

It was because of the Hero response, I think. My custom Elf had no problem getting into and walking around the Undertavern, and she used the Outlaw tag response to get in.
