Who is the best rogue Beast or Fane
I will say Beast, since Fane should be mage...

Beast's innate ability sucks, Fane's source skill allows him to take an extra turn, magic or melee Fane will wreck.
Both aren't great rouges. Ifan, Lohse, and Sebbile are better rouge options. If you have to choose between the two pick Fane as the rouge since he has time warp and play dead.

not sure what you're on about, Fane is probably the best character at any role because of his source skill. The other characters don't really bring anything to the table that makes them better at being a rogue over him, especially useless Ifan and his spirit wolf. Lohse's ability only works when magic armor is down, Sebille's special can be mimicked through potions and armor. Flesh sacrifice is neat but you can replicate that by wearing the shapeshifter mask and becoming an elf.

Using mask of the shapeshifter takes up an armor slot (at least Fane's does), and using the mask tends to screw with companion dialogue. Enemies tend to purposely back up to walls to make themselves immune to backstab, so I find the +5% crit chance from humans useful in that situation

5 percent crit isn't a big game changer, especially as you get into your teens where you'll generally be at 70+ percent crit, and yes while some enemies will stubbornly put their backs to the walls, most of the time you'll have free reign of their spines. Yeah there are drawbacks to using the mask, especially if one forgets they're wearing it, but it shouldn't be necessary since taking double turns is better than flesh sac anyway.

Rogue Fane all the way. His time warp - along with play dead, makes him such an excellent rogue that can support himself. I found Beast to be a better mage/battlemage because of the sturdy talent (small tank stat for survival) and his special ability "Blinding Squall" for the blind ability.

When you get into Act 2, you can just craft an Elven Shapeshifter Mask with a Ripped-off Elf Face and a Source Orb (available to buy from a trader you'll meet on the ship). Equip it, shapeshift into elf, put on your regular headgear again. The transformation will stay, unlike if you were using Fane's mask. I've had Fane as a Rogue companion for most of the game so far (I'm a decent ways into Act 2 now) and I have had maybe two or three cases of enemies being un-backstabbable.

Fane brings nothing to the table as a Rogue. "Free lockpicks" is cosmetic, they are easy enough to make.

On the other Hand, Beast, by virtue of being a dwarf, has more health and some extra evasion, both of which are helpful for melee combatants.

Yeah, I'm really not feeling all this Fane rocks as melee and mage... But your arguments are really logical...

I second this. I enjoy dwarves as rogues for the already stated reasons.

Also, from an aesthetic viewpoint, Beast is the perfect height to swoop in and rupture tendons. I always felt it was weird to see a tall ass elf or skeleton do things like that.

As long as there is no Decapitate skill :-)

No, Fane is weak mage and ranger (3SP skills >>> fane ability). You can use source orbs - but they're expensive in act 2 and in act 4 you have access to tea so ...

BTW. Flesh sacriface is better then double turn if you plan to use arrow storm or meteoric shower.

1. Mask of Shapeshifter takes the head slot, however, a race face does not.

2. Rogues don’t need critical chance, they can backstab enemies and backstabs count as critical hits.

3. Fane has the best origin skill in the game, only matched by the custom origin one.

4. Fane, as an undead, get’s fake death and free lockpicks.

TL,DR: Technically, Fane is the best character in-game, regardless whatever the class you want to roll, the only reason to opt out from Fane, is the healing mechanics, if you dislike having to throw poison around to heal him up.

Why not use both? Since you probably play as a Lone Wolf anyway, story dialogue with party members doesn't really matter and a crafted Elven Shapeshifter Mask doesn't take up the helmet slot while still retaining the transformation.

Fane. Fane can use the mask of the shapeshifter to turn into a elf and get flesh sacrifice.
