To mod or not to mod?
So I'm just curious. Is it better to play, and beat the game with no mods at first, or are there some mods that are highly recommended? For example, skyrim/fallout had simple mods like unoffical patch mods and ect.

The game doesn't need mods -- not in the same fashion as the games you mention. I personally wouldn't risk modding the game on a first playthrough anyway. Few know how to fix any problems should they occur. If something goes wrong you're on your own mostly and there are no utilities (like TESdit etc. to help.

Plus, you also have updates to think about which may wreck the mods/game.

I would recommend grabbing "Faster Run Speed" and "No Items Added to Hotbar." A mod on Nexusmods simply called "Achievements" will allow you to get achievements while playing with them enabled. Both of those mentioned mods are not going to affect combat, but you'd be surprised how much time moving 30% faster outside of combat saves you, especially when you're backtracking through a town to find NPCs for quests and such. The items that get added to hotbar drive a lot of people crazy, and there's not an in game way to stop it.

If I were to get one, the no items to hotbar would be it...certainly. Though I can't say I know a thing about its compatibility and how it has progressed with each update. Running speed is too risky to mess with -- at least in the general sense -- and not something I care about enough to take the risk.

I can confirm that No Items Added to Hotbar won't cause any issues no matter how you play. It alters only two files that disables the "add to hotbar" function of potions and loot items, so unless Larian makes some serious core-engine changes to how the entire game is built, new updates shouldn't break anything.

Cool, thanks everyone for your quick response!

Mods will improve the game by a lot! But like someone else mentioned, the game is already brilliant just as it is. You don't feel forced to get them (like for example in many Bethesda games).

If you do try a mod out, get this first: https://www.nexusmods.com/divinityoriginalsin2/mods/210/?
It will enable achievements in a modded game.

Good to know. I thank you too. I will probably add this one. :)
If you don't care about achievements id recommend the character creation plus mod (not compatible with the run speed mods).

I just linked the achievement enabling mod above. I use it together with character creation plus and I still get achievements.
