I usually do it at level 6-7.

You do it at level 7 or 8, depending on how much you combed the island. It works OK at level 7, especially if you have already done it before.

Fought it first at 6, wiped a bunch of times so I went back and finished clearing out the magisters at the fort, came back at 7 and roughed em up with little issue.

I'm usually level 8 when I go hit him up.

i fought it at level 7, won first attempt, no real issue... probly used 3 res scrolls, before pulling back after worm came and constantly fleeing and reentering the fight to better my positions.

8 ..and you most likely will hit level 9 during the battle if you did all the content before that..

If you take fane with you and unmask him, everyone will fight you. Almost everyone, that extra xp can push you half way to lv 9, then after the ship, which I won't spoil, you'll arrive in port at lv 9, which goes a long way to helping you in later quests there.

Otherwise, do all the quests first, then kill everyone afterwards. Also at lv 7-8 you can kill slane the dragon for some nice lv 9 weapons & xp. Which will give you 2 wands to kill shriekers with. Don't forget to talk to gratiana to get them refilled tho, before you start the alexander fight. Dunno where she goes.. but she isn't on the ship.

Once on the next act, you can use the purge wands in a certain location. Until you get your own skill in it.

As for the fight itself, explore various flanking options, I prefer to put 2 guys on the steps and 2 on the right side, just move the oil barrel first when sneaking. Engage on the right, pulling everyone over in that direction, then kill the mage with the guys on the steps.

You can also kill the wraith from the steps, if you are in sneak, just fire once, then hide, fire, hide.. if you aim a little aoe arrow slightly north of the ladder facing you, you'll hit a hidden assassin there. Or watch Alexander as he walks around, as he'll walk right around where the assassin stands.

When the worm comes, just back off for a couple of rounds and heal up, let alexanders goons fight it. Don't engage it or them, or they'll just attack you as well. All that fire is annoying.

If you have someone with sneak and teleport and a jump ability, you can put them on the left side, in sneak, when the mage moves to the edge to fire, wait for them to use their teleport, then attack them, and teleport them onto the far side of the ground.

Yeah doing it on Tacitician at level 7, done all the quests and combat i can think of, even did slane the dragon quest, didnt fight, finished the quest by killed Radeka etc. Did the void ambush, did ruined castle / armory not sure what else i missed. Guess I'll keep trying at level 7 though that assassin hits really hard
