The magisters think the solution to get them out of this world is to silence every source magician.
Godwoken use source magic, too.
You can learn a little more in the first game or if you just go further in the storyline of this game.
Actually, they explain it all to you. If you bother to read it.
Officially, the sourcerers are supposed to be cured at fort joy but the quality of their cure is ... questionable.
One thing I completely missed up until the end of the game is that Windego is an important character throughout the story as she is actually telling it.
There's more to all this but I'd leave that up to you to discover for yourself.
You are a sourcerer, a foul person who feeds on the life-force of other people to fuel your dark magic. Additionally, the void follows you everywhere, meaning it is dangerous for even a gentle sourcerer to live freely.
For both of these reasons, the magistrate created Fort Joy for the safety of yourself and others. Magisters are decent folk who believe in making sacrifices (personal and otherwise) to save a desperate realm from destruction.
Unfortunately, even the greatest of their efforts prove ineffective; however, they will not be dissuaded from their righteousness of their cause. After all, it is Alexander himself who leads the cause!
Perhaps, it is YOU who needs to look in the mirror: Perhaps, it is YOU who is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy...
All of you sourcerers are the same...

This is the reason why Arhu was given such a prominent role in the first game: To dump the exposition on you clearly so that you understand what you are doing xd.
Essentially, your goal is to avoid persecution due to you unfortunate heritage. The story evolves from there.
Actually, they do explain it. And the game is not boring, at all. I believe the reviews speak for themselves. You're, most definitely, a minority in this aspect.
The reviews are: 94% of the 39,227 user reviews for this game are positive.
Sourcerers are people Who can use source for magic. Most Sourcerers are not evil and use their powers to heal. Recently however the use of source has started to attract voidwoken, causing chaos, death and destruction. You are one of these Sourcerers and you are free To write your own backround, wether you were lawful or not and wether the events of fort Joy affect your characters.
The Divine order has started to collect Sourcerers and collar them to protect people from voidwoken monsters. Magisters are trying to find a solution to stop voidwoken attacks, which is a nobel goal but as you notice their solution is not very kind to the Sourcerers. Later you will discover that many "lawful citizen" have made questionable alliances and even people you consider kind or loving might actually be capable of terrible things if it they can gain somethings from it.
About the voidwoken, pick Fane In your party to get more lore of them. (Minor SPOILER AHEAD) I only say that they are not evil. They dont want to be monsters. Mortal races however have an unfortunate role In history, which makes them the victims and makes voidwoken seem like the force of evil.
