Poison is the least useful
Seems like many if not most enemies have got high poison resistance. Undead have 200%, non-undead usually have at least 50%.

I can hardly use my poison based spell in any battles

Useful when you play with Rand 😉
I find that water, air and earth are least likely to be resistant, or 1 of the 3.. There's also not as many good healing spells, just poison clouds and blood pools pretty much. In the lowest level, against humans, poison tends to work really well though.
healing spells are surprisingly good damage dealers due to the amount of undead enemies, especially late game.
Seems to me like air and water is the best. I haven't really encountered many enemies that can resist it yet. (Act 4)
Poison doubles as a healing spell for undead characters. As such, it is actually pretty darn useful.

Also due to this, it's not the highest hitting spell school.

Regardless OP, my summoner/geo Fane and his Living Artillery would like a word with you about their usefulness.
Trick is, pair it with fire. Don't only use poison geo spells. Use oil. Oil is so damn helpful in so many fights and it explodes just as nicely as poison.
Enemies may resist poison very well... but do they resist earth too? I think geo is the only school that is actually 2 different types of resistances. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Air and water is best CC spells.

Rain + Air spell (electricity) = stun
Rain + Water spell (cold) = frozen

Also Rain increase damage to air and frost.

You can CC even 3 enemies who stand very, very far away from each other, water have spell with 3 targets, all 3 will be frozen.

Also water and air rarely get resisted. Fire is often "Fire immunity aura" or high resists.

You're not. And yea, they may be resistant to the poison cloud, but are they resistant to the laser beam that follows it?
Poison and fire is good early game, but yea late game almost all the enemies are undead or resitance to either one. Water and aero is actually a pretty good combo. You can stun easily and aero does alot of damage.
Rain -> contaminate -> fire (dragon) breath if you are a lizard = massive damage

Edit: all this only requires 4 ap so it's very easy to pull off on your first turn for a massive burst
If you manage to break physical armor of Undeads, you can apply Decaying status on them
1) Necro Fire + Rain = Cursed Steam Cloud
2) Decaying Touch, Corrupted Blade, Blood Storm
3) Cursed Warter/Blood Surface (This is not easy to manage)

In this case, your poison spells don't need to break magic shields and will go right through the Vital. Decaying makes it easy to kill Undead enemies with thick magic armor/high resistance.

Try Decaying + Poison surface + Elemental Ranger(talent) + Elemental Arrow + Venom Coating on Undead boss. It's just... sweet.
