Why is Counting Your Chickens such a ♥♥♥♥ quest? [Spoilers]

So you have to end it by killing Peeper. Why? I devoted so much time and effort to keeping that little ♥♥♥♥ alive. But you get no option to save him. The quest just ends with everyone dead and a garbage reward for not slitting the throat of your pet. Why the hell is he not a summon like the cat?

Because he is clearly corrupted and murderous when you find him. There is no panacea in Divinity, and there shouldn't be a way to save everyone and everything. This isn't a disney fairy tale, a miracle won't happen just by struggling.

Take his sorce Orb and be happy. It's a diversion, like a lot of unique quests in the game.

P.S. If it makes you feel better go try to tame Featherfall in the Stonegarden Cemetry for a companion.

Teleport back to the Lady Vengeance, go to the bottom deck and use the mirror to respec into persuasion for those checks. You can always spec back into whatever you had before if it's an issue. But my groups always have a 'Face' with maxed out persuasion for these things.

So uh, I took Peeper north, past the paladin outpost and north of the void-stag encounter. There I met "magicockerel". There was an...interaction....and I ended up with like 5 source orbs and random loot. I think that might be the "proper" ending to that quest.
