In case anyone else is wondering, since I too, for the longest time, thought he was essentially asking me to kill myself:

Maol is simply a very literal person. If he thinks you have a burden to carry he gives you a rope as that is a tool meant to help you pull/carry/lift burdens. If he thinks you are trying to grow power he gives you seeds so you an get used to growing things and if you say you have lost something/are looking for something he gives you a random jewel he found, so you may found what you are looking for too.
