It's simply a special interaction between two characters and nothing more. At least that's what it is in this game. Origin characters simply part their ways from you in the end dialogue, and that's about it. But I don't believe that this is an enough reason for you to say that the ending is unsatisfying.
The ending is bittersweet, depending on your choice.
If you tried the other options in the end game dialogues, you will get different endings. And imo, all of them don't really have a pure happy ending. Remember when this game always told you, everything has a consequence. It really does, and the end scenes would take account of almost everything you've done throughout your journey. I think that is beautiful, no matter what which path you take. I was also disappointed in my first ending playthrough, I did not like what happened after I shared source throughout Rivellon. I thought it was a good ending, but people ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and created a war.
Another thing too is how your companions / Malady / Tarquin / etc., will react to your decision.
For example, Ifan will not tolerate you for giving up your source...
No matter your choices... some people or even yourself wouldn't be satisfied at all.
It's always about the consequences.
