CPU heats up to 91c while this game is launched? (resolved)
To preface this, I can run current games on ultra with literal to no issue (AC: Sydnicate, Fallout 4, Ghostlands, Killing Floor 2, Warhammer Total War, etc.)

The peak is generally around 61c-70c during any other game. As mentioned in the title, this game QUICKLY revs up to 91c; hot enough that I can actually smell the heated metal. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Specs:

I7-7700k
GTX1080
16gb Ram

*UPDATE* - "As a follow up since this thread got revived, the full release/patch fixed the problem; it was a game-side issue in the end. Glad it was resolved, the game is phenomenal."

I'd check CPU usage. Are you OCing? Perhaps there's an overclock pushing the voltage or frequency really high while running DOS2 (and a lot of that is automatic these days between turbo clocks, etc., even if you aren't manually OCing). Check the max voltage, CPU clock frequency, and CPU usage in other games and compare that to DOS2.

Most of the games you listed tend to work the GPU a lot harder than the CPU, so it could be that DOS2 is more CPU intensive than the games you usually play and that's causing an issue you don't normally run into. It could also be a bug in the game. Simply not enough info in your post to know either way.

I have run the steam 3DMark test with no issues, and my PC preformed relatively well for what it is with no overheating issues. Again, I know I sound like a broken record here, but this doesn't happen with anything else other than this one title. I spent an entire day stress-testing my system with no issues to confidently narrow it down to this game solely.

Try running Prime95 stress test, this will actually fully utilize your CPU and expose any issues as opposed to 3DMark, which is primarily a GPU Stress test.

There was someone posting about a similar issue awhile ago. I think the best thing to do is to contact Larian support to see if they had a fix or know what's up.

3D marks is not the best stress test for a CPU it only puts the load on the GPU, there are a few test out there that you can use Prime is one of them, though I have not used it in few years.
If the CPU test causes it to do the same thing I would start with double checking the case fans to make sure there are installed facing the correct way.

I had derp moment when I was building my PC in the past where I had the fan facing the wrong way and when I played Sup Commander it would cause my CPU to heat up more then I liked.

Ryzen are nice but in general I am not a fan of AMD, I had to many problems with thier last gen of CPUs. Having those extra cores is nice but most of the games I have and play would never take advantage of those extra cores. Only game I can think of that might take advantage of them would be Star Citizen when ever that game finally comes out.

What I meant by 'other games working', with my example, was to say that all software isn't created equal; why did every other AAA demanding game run fine, but one crashed my system? Turned out to be dust in the video card. Normally, with no dust, they all would have run fine; is it really a game issue because it was the one that brought the problem to my attention?

After reading your response, I'm wondering why you applied new thermal paste for a chip released less than a year ago? I'm guessing you are an enthusiast like me, but it seems strange to do just 'do it'. Perhaps my 'dust in the video card' is your 'thermal paste'?

Have you tried running any intensive tests like MemTest or even Future Mark, and does your temp rise so high with them?

Every know-how pc building forum I have ever turned to for tips has recommended that I replace market-paste with artic silver paste due to the benefits of it being a higher quality compound; so that is what I did (and have done for close to a decade now) with new CPU's.

Artic silver thermal paste is pretty much a must have these days. Ive literally had it reduce the cpu heat by as much as 15c

yes for games

Intel are only better when you play ♥♥♥♥♥♥ optimized games and need to reach 120+ FPS.

If 60 FPS are enough, Ryzen owns Intel CPUs all day long with their much better pricing and build quality.

But just as a follow up since this thread got revived, the full release/patch fixed the problem; it was a game-side issue in the end. Glad it was resolved, the game is phenomenal.

Have you cleaned out your PC lately. Dust in your PC can cause overheating issues. 91C is running to hot. It still within specs but just barely. Not a good idea to run it that hot. It won't last long.

People say get a Ryzen. But that also entails most likely getting a new motherboard. Its not as simple as just buying a new CPU.
MrPlowjoy 2021년 1월 21일 오전 1시 59분
Just jumping into this thread, I have this issue as recently as yesterday,

My CPU, a 5950x, was hitting 90 degrees when loading levels. That CPU is apparently good to 95 degrees BUT I don't have this problem even when running benchmarks and stress-tests. The CPU there caps at about 77-78 degrees.

I'm running a closed loop water cooler with two 140mm fans in push/pull, on a balanced profile.

Has anyone else seen this on the newer AMD CPUs?
