I asked this very same question but ended up buying the first one anyway yesterday, I have absolutely no regrets its just as good as this one.
Yeah, game is played from the perspective of different characters than the first game, there might be a few references to events and characters from the first game but the way I see it the character you are playing as in this game probably wasn't a witness to those events and never met those characters so as a player taking control of them you will be on the same page
Also if we are speaking from a gameplay mechanic point of view there has been quite a few changes, like how resistances against negative status effects work, how a lot of abilities work and what skill they fall under as well as a lot of general aditions so while knowledge of the previous game's mechanics may be helpful a lot of it wont be applicable, besides I think they just added a tutorial section to the game or there will be one at launch.
That said I would still recommend getting the first game if only for the fact that it is a really good game, of course Original Sin 2 does look like it is shaping up to be the superior of the 2 with all of it's improvements and new features but the first game is still a great game in it's own right.
