Oh! Thats exciting!
I played Divinity 1 with friends and alone and we absolutely didn't care about the story.. I knew the big lines, what the conflict was about etc but the tactic part is so much awesome that it was so fun to play it even if we didn't follow the story very well.
I know what you feel and i'd say for a game like Mass Effect or The Witcher you HAVE TO play them in order because characters are so deep and the story is everything.
But for divinity i think that you can safely go on the second one without the fear of missing something.
The only thing you will miss is that you may want more after you finished it. So i suggest that you finish the first one before :) ( The 1 is allready a masterpiece )
You should play 1 though! Even if you don't do it first, it's a really fun game. Make sure you use the Enhanced Edition. Easiest comp is 3 or 4 mages, for fun you can do double Lone Wolf or anything else you want :D
