Inconsistentcy of quest tracking, map and markers
I first have to say, this is the first Divinity i play. I know, not a smart choice but friends recommended me to try it so i agreed. I love the game by the way.

I found few problems with it tho, problems that can be easily adressed and that after 20 years of gaming make me wonder why they're there in the first place. Wondering if they're problems that echoed from the first game or that are just beta problems.

With the first problem i made a post about it, it's about ground stun abusage (elecrticity, frost) that can be literally impossible to deal with on a first try.

My second problem is with quest tracking. The legend says there's a "quest marker" represented by a red flag. Never seen it in both my playthrough. So i find it really hard to know what to do, since the yellow markers stay forever and don't disappear once the related quest is completed. Quest objects are by no mean highlighted so it's way too easy ending up selling them or dropping them. The diary doesn't give ANY indication on where the objective is or where the person you need to talk is.
I mean... you have a map and you know what to do, it's not about realism or immersion, even a man with little brain capacity could mark it down in the map. Yet you have to do it yourself and the marker is awful, it's not precise, it looks awful and confusing and it has zero personalization.
Not even mentioning letters and books management... Keys as well... Am i supposed to keep them? Can i throw then away? Which one do i need? I don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ know...

I did not play the first game too, tried it but was not caught then and stopped after an hour. But I like DOS2 for several reasons. However, what you said I felt the same.

The absence of precise information, I learned from reading, seems to be a feature of the games, beloved by many fans. It got a bit better during the EA but sometimes I feel lost.

As someone who always disables compass and related quest markers in games I would be ok if the descriptions were helpful. Sometimes they are not. When I first read Gavins talk where he wanted to be teleported I searched and searched, always thinking, "No, it could not be the Hidden Alcove, it could not be it" but it was.

In my opinion the infos get a bit better after leaving the Fort and coming to the swamp. Hopefully it stays so.

About items, I'm also with you. I don't mind selling precious ingredients for nothing but I would prefer more hints what is necessary as quest item.

The journal is a work in progress.
Usage of quest markers is limited. Quests are generally not designed to be followed in a linear manner, and there are usually multiple solutions.

But there's no "quest marker" on the map even though it's on the map legend (the red flag). Is that a beta deficiency?

Red flags are what YOU add, by clicking on the map. It allows you to place your own notes. I add things like 'Warfare Merchant', 'Tough Battle', and 'Cave here - cleared'.

Yellow pins are actual quest markers, but don't appear for everything. Like the Crocodiles; the NPC tells you where they are, so it's marked on the map. Another quest might want you to find something, but the NPC doesn't know where it is, so it is not marked.

I do agree that the yellow pins need to be removed though; with my 40+ self-made red markers, losing those would slightly unclutter my map.

No, the things that you add are red pins. Not red flags. Still there should be a red flag marking the main quest or the one you're supposed to select on the journal. But i think that's either not implemented yet or bugged.
Also there's no reason for yellow pins to stay even after you completed the quest. It's confusing as hell
