Question about equipment durability

I noticed that essentially all common weapons and armor have no durability stat, making them last forever. However when I found my first rare weapon, "The World's End", it actually had a durability stat, which didn't decrease in combat.

How does durability work?

Durability only decreases when you hit objects (doors, chests, etc) by 1 each hit, not when you hit enemies.
