Report a translation problem
There's a possibility you can save him but there's really not much point in it unless you're serious about roleplaying and there's a good chance of corruption occuring since his death is probably scripted as well.
He can go through the first group of skeletons (alone) but I couldn't kill the 2nd group of skeletons with (the voidvoken demon) in the Hollow Marshes while protecting him. So I had to let him die in front of me :(

did you try the teleportation route ? it doesnt make sense for dialog to actually change if there is no way for him to live.
You mean teleport him down to the beach? I guess he would live and just wander around down there, idk. I think the quest fails if you do that.
Has anyone else gotten him past the docks to know for sure where his next stop is?
