what classes you and your friend is running for the whole squad? So people can give you recommendations on useful skills easier. Starting skills play an important part too.
btw, in Fort Joy, only buy common (White) gears for your squad since you are going to replace gears from times to times.
Ex: a lvl4 gear can beat a lvl3 gear easily , stat-wise. Yet the uncommon (Green) stuff is like x2 x3 times more expensive than common stuff now. Only buy gears that worth keeping for awhile.
save money, use thievery to get the books you need. They are going to add skill crafting soon so that will help in the future.
EDIT: give the books merchant in Fort Joy like 200+ gold , you can easily reach 100 reputation with them. In exchange they give you good sale on thier stuffs.
>> My main char had 4 bartering before i bought books with 400~500g , atm i have 7 bartering , books price is only around 300g and 400g for high tier books. Since merchant sell same set of books all the time ( at least for Act 1 ) , so you can always come back and buy books from the one you are in good relationship with.
EDIT 2: i got 5 books from looting at Fort Joy for the current run. 2 fixed ( teleportation in magister room , battle stomp in fort's prison near the boat area ) , other 3 were random.
>> Use it to plan your starting skills , maybe Ram / Haste / Rage for the fighter , you get Stomp for free in prison. Mage can learn teleportation from the book in magister room without buying it , give the tele glove for another character and you have 2 teleportation for free.
>> There are alot more fixed books drop futher more in Act 1 but i cant quite remember.
