Is it important to have played Divinity: Original Sin 1? [Story-wise]

My friends haven't played D:OSEE (I haven't finished it yet, plan to this weekend.)
Is it important for them to know?

D:OS 2 is set 4 years after Beyond Divinity, 58 years before Divinity 2.

If any events of the previous games are relevant to D:OS 2, they will be described in dialogue and/or books, etc. Familiarity with them would help with the general lore and game design (and the odd reference or easter egg), but will not be assumed or required.
