Welcome, and thanks for taking an early look at The Long Telegram: Balance of Terror, Chapter I. I’m John, the developer. With the Steam page now up, I wanted to explain where development stands and what I’m working on next.

The Long Telegram is a turn-based Cold War strategy game about building influence abroad while keeping enough political power at home to act. You take Washington’s or Moscow’s chair, read the incoming reports, weigh competing advice, and commit resources you cannot spend twice.

A coal strike needs an answer. An ally wants help. Your advisers disagree, and the intelligence leaves room for doubt. The question is which commitments you can afford—and what they leave you able to do next.

Washington and Moscow face different pressures. Congress, organized labor, business, and public opinion shape the American leader’s room to act. In Moscow, the party, army, rival power centers, and the reliability of reports create a different problem of command.

The expanded leader, cabinet, and home-front experience currently covers the 1946 opening. My current work focuses on cabinet appointments, policy papers, and making it easier to follow how orders become outcomes: who holds office, which proposals reach your desk, and what the next dispatch tells you about the result.

Some of that work is already in the development build. I’m still testing the balance, refining the wording, and checking that the game explains the consequences clearly. The screenshots here show an earlier development build, rather than the latest cabinet changes.

The next work is more testing and balancing of the 1946 experience, clearer presentation of decisions and their results, and extending the expanded leader and home-front systems into the later campaign years. Release timing and the final feature set are still to be announced. There is no public demo of this rebuild yet.

Would you start in Washington or Moscow—and what would you want to know before your first turn? Leave a comment or join the discussions.

If this sounds like your kind of strategy game, please wishlist The Long Telegram and follow it here on Steam for future development updates.

Thanks for being here at the beginning.
