Well it's not surprising, remember that the voice actor is nearly 20 years older than when he did them the first time. He's an old man now. He won't sound the same.

age made him soft. i guess age does that.

It's not necessarily a problem of age.

Duke's voice actor Jon St. John was specifically directed to deliver his lines through gritted teeth during the recording session for Duke Nukem 3D back in '96.
Apparently he doesn't favour this approach and neither does Gearbox, so he's received the freedom to put more personality into his work (as he sees it).
In my view the result is too "hammy" and I would have preferred the original performances reproduced in higher quality.

3D Realms obviously gave him certain instructions on executing his lines. When he grits his teeth during interviews, he definitely sounds alot closer to his DN3D Duke voice.

The new voice sucks.

it looks like the new sounds don't mesh well with the old sounds, since there's a pretty big difference between them

its not the age, in an interview jon st jon said he didnt want to growl his voice lines anymore.....but 3d realms forced him to because that was the character, gearbox isnt making him....and its kinda not as good

make duke's voice great again!

Keep in mind that Duke 3D's original voice was recorded in a poor audio format back in 1994 and 1995 to save disk space. That old audio actually makes Jon's voice sound richer than it is. Not to mention this is 20 years later, and Jon has aged just like the rest of us.

the first impression when i hear the new version..i was like "Gearbox must be underpaying him to do the voice, he don't feel energetic or willing to do it"

How would you feel to get dragged back into something you already did once, and have it be done all over again knowing full well who it is you're doing it for. It's reflective.

Obviously i can't say that's exactly what this is but unless the guy himself states anything, it's all speculation.
Sounds great to me, Jon has still got it, baby.

if his heart truly isn't in the character, that's cool. people change. but then they should have cut him loose so we could find a new king, baby.
