Who pi$$ed in your cornflakes?
Face it... This game is a downgrade version from megaton and even the old Atomic Edition. It boggles the mind on how they could screw it up. Everything about it, apart from the new episode, is subpar.
Take the Toxic Waste level from Episode 1. I can’t see nothing in the caves, enemies, ammo etc.. until I’m basically on top of it.

What is your problem? You’re carrying on like I just insulted your mum. I asked about a lighting problem I’m having with this Duke release, and all you’ve done is carry on like a pork chop.
I have just about every single Duke release. I pre-ordered this game on steam and PlayStation. So I’m a massive fan boy, but I feel I got Jewed over hard with this.
Also, I don't care if it comes from Gear Box, I dont care who made it. This version is just not very good. It’s a step backwards.
Okay, I'll try to explain it. For example take the caves above the water... You’re standing on the rock in the center. There’s enemy’s in the caves, but you can’t see them. You can only see their fire coming towards you. When you go in the caves there’s health and rpg ammo. But you can hardly see that wither until your right on top of it.
I wish I could post screen shots on here. I would compare megaton and this. You can definitely notice the difference.

here is the same area using World Tour, again basic settings.

Both look dark.
Just in case, a shot using the new renderer

Maybe this is why Megaton was so bright; because the renderer overwrote the lighting set up of the original maps?
To me it looks like they actually went through and added lights to the levels using the new renderer for this release. Check out the air ducts in the very first level for instance. There's a light source in there that wasn't in the original. It actually looks a little out of place to me to be honest, after so many years of being used to the original software renderer, but I assume they did it so new players wouldn't complain about how dark the original game can be in places. Back when the original came out everyone was using CRT monitors which had much better contrast and shadow detail than modern LCD screens, so back then even the faintest little hint of something hiding in the shadows could easily be resolved, and it was actually extremely immersive. Nowadays this kind of subtle detail tends to get lost due to backlight bleed.
Anywho, the fact that you are complaining about the game being darker than it should be means there is either some kind of gamma problem on your end, or your expectations are based on the Megaton version, which was extremely unfaithful to the original when it was first released. They later patched in more accurate darker lighting, but it was still not completely faithful to the original. Modern EDuke32 using Polymost (with the proper tile shade texture settings) looks pretty damn close.

I mean, it's so much brighter all around. It's not just a general lack of lighting like in the initial Megaton release, but it seems pretty apparent to me they have actually gone in and added lights with the new renderer. You can see how it is both colored lighting, and in this shot brighter on the right side of the image as compared to the left. You can see it's actually a light source being cast on the environment, and it adds a sense of depth to the sub for instance with how it creates a shading effect.
Whether or not it looks good is a matter of opinion. I for one enjoy blasting through the levels with a little bit of added eye candy after all these years. It's hard for me to say if it looks better or not because I tend to be a bit of a purist, but it's just something different and I enjoy it for what it is.

And here is an example of what some other parts of my levels look like. This particular one actually looks, while still pretty darkened, brighter in the original, even if not by a lot:
