Nope,no one plays this anymore. In fact,I'm not sure any significant community actually played this even at release.

You're right, not really, back during the time, the 90's no one REALLY played these games online, maybe a few here and there. A small number of full servers with a few open. Mostly because the servers were either LAN or had to be connected manually, there weren't many simple user ready interfaces for players just click on. NOT UNTIL Quake II, Unreal and Half-Life.

I believe by memory Online Gaming didn't REALLY become a thing until the late 90's, a little over 2000. It didn't REALLY explode until Delta Force Black Hawk Down, Operation Flashpoint AND of course ... COUNTER-STRIKE!

Soldier of Fortune, Soldier of Fortune 2 and RTCW were a thing briefly, but died rather quickly. Command & Conquer Renegade was good and had a player base but didn't catch on therefore short lived.

I think Blood bath, BLOOD was more popular than Duke Match anyway.

RTCW and SOF2 died quickly? I remember them doing well for at least 5 years? Not as active as BF or CS but enough servers to join with enough players.

RTCW actually had a stand alone MP release that improved it 10 fold. It was called 'Enemy Teritory' and added ranks and stuff. Unreal Tournament also helped the online shooter community

RTCW did pretty well but yeh ET was what kept it going. A lot of the devs behind RTCW were in Xatrix who made Kingpin; which actually had it's own pretty big MP scene with frequently filled up servers for a good couple years as well as its own clan scene. We still play KPDM nowadays, though there are nowhere near as many players as there were back in KP's peak

Compared to the player base of more well known popular games I don't remember it being as active. I meant it just wasn't as alive as other games. Sure they still had a dedicated player base.

It's shame what happened to Soldier Of Fortune, both PC versions of SOF and SOF 2 were great. After that :(

Ooh, speaking of SOF2 I've found that there are a LOT of active players in that community. Just need some patching and a fixed server list, if you join a non-bot server there are almost always people playing at any point in the day

when duke nukem 3d got a 360 port in 2008, there was a massive online dukematch community. it lasted roughly 2-3 years. it was great, with the exception of boosters. There was a trueskill system in place 0-50 that was a good touch... it's just a shame that the 20th anniversary didn't bring back the spark - since 2016, i have not once seen a multiplayer lobby active .. even though in the developer audio bites, they talk about how they have modified the maps for duke matches .. it's a shame really, it's a great fast paced game to play online.

Hard to learn against pros, I swear. You have to manually disable auto-aim for rockets, memorize every spawn location for a tripmine for lack of spawn protection, and pretty much have to know where to hoard your weapons/atomic health. If there's a point your enemy gains too much momentum, it's hard to get back on the board. They already have jetpack, roids, 200hp, and all the weapons and you just spawn with a pistol.

Redxplatinum Jul 21, 2020 @ 9:03pm
