You're right, not really, back during the time, the 90's no one REALLY played these games online, maybe a few here and there. A small number of full servers with a few open. Mostly because the servers were either LAN or had to be connected manually, there weren't many simple user ready interfaces for players just click on. NOT UNTIL Quake II, Unreal and Half-Life.
I believe by memory Online Gaming didn't REALLY become a thing until the late 90's, a little over 2000. It didn't REALLY explode until Delta Force Black Hawk Down, Operation Flashpoint AND of course ... COUNTER-STRIKE!
Soldier of Fortune, Soldier of Fortune 2 and RTCW were a thing briefly, but died rather quickly. Command & Conquer Renegade was good and had a player base but didn't catch on therefore short lived.
I think Blood bath, BLOOD was more popular than Duke Match anyway.
RTCW and SOF2 died quickly? I remember them doing well for at least 5 years? Not as active as BF or CS but enough servers to join with enough players.
RTCW actually had a stand alone MP release that improved it 10 fold. It was called 'Enemy Teritory' and added ranks and stuff. Unreal Tournament also helped the online shooter community
It's shame what happened to Soldier Of Fortune, both PC versions of SOF and SOF 2 were great. After that :(
Well to be fair it's new on switch. It will die i assume.
