How exactly do I enter the cheat codes?

I've tried it while playing but don't get anything to indicate they're activated

It'll say on the top of the screen if they are activated

Just type them in while the game is running (not paused, not on the menu, not in the console). You should get a message on top of the screen. Note that codes don't work on the highest difficulty (Damn I'm Good).

Which keys? As far as I remember all of Duke 3D's cheat codes use only regular letters, (DNSTUFF, DNWEAPONS etc).
What list of cheat codes are you trying to input, are they for the right version or game?

I have the 20th year annivesary. The codes work. Simply type a code while playing the game. No need to pause of bring up a special window or anything. Just type the code.

Ah yes, the other set of World Tour-exclusive console codes. I forgot about those.
But the original Duke 3D codes still work, and are entered the same way as always.
