Can we load custom maps?
(I'm an old fart...)

I used to make Doom WADs and Duke MAPs. I wonder if I can find my MAP files somewhere, one of them was rather large and based on a hotel.

Can anyone tell me if there's a way to load the files into this version of the game? (assuming I find them among my trove of disks...)

Speaking about the devil, I found it :) A 329k MAP file, even has the TXT file for descriptions... Does anyone here have an idea where I could upload it so as to benefit the rest of the community in case they like to play a relatively complex level with multiple layers of rooms on top of each other?

I don't really know how to do this but check out the "Workshop".
This is the place to do such things.
That's all i know about custom map making sorry.

Best wishes, Cap :duke:

Thanks. Seems that it's possible to load the map in the console, but I can't get the tilde ~ button to work as it's a Swiss keyboard. But I overwrote the origina E1L1.map file with mine just to test it out, and I was able to play my old map.

I seem to have trouble finding out how to upload maps to the Workshop, I see no way of doing it :\ Not like I've tried really hard, but would be nice to share my nearly 20 year old map one day :)

There is an upload tool in the game's folder.

Pretty cool, that actually worked, thank you "haha nerds..." :)

If anyone wants to give it a go, look for "Hilton Jr" and hopefully enjoy the experience.

Thank you very much for sharing your 1997 map with us. It's a well made and pretty awesome lookin map. It's fun for me playing it and it's also well made when we are looking at performance. We need to get back more of our old 90ties maps.
Keep going, good job!! :DukeRadioactive:

Here's the map:

Back then I had to keep the performance in check as it wasn't my PC and I only got so many opportunities to work on the map, so I wanted to ensure it runs more or less fine, considering it's quite large.

I had a quick play through and of course I'd like to go through it once more and change some stuff like the restaurant doors which are comically large. But I've had to move on or it'll never end :)

If only I found all my other Duke, Doom and Unreal/UT maps... they must be somewhere here...

Thank you for playing!

Most players hate new good/OK maps. Why you think they are satisfied with 90s maps with low details and bad wayfindingpaths? They expect maps what are better or good as WT/Caribbean maps xD and that inwhile the workshop is pretty dead. ;-)

I think older players would be happy to play old maps wich they played as child.
For me this is great retro flash feeling :aainstank: :aainstrooper:

When (if) I have kids, I'm hoping they will play games from the groun up, starting with something simple like a NES, passing by the early Doom/Duke3D engines and so, before ending up with (whatever magic devices we have then... Hololens of the future or whatever), so that they can appreciate what we had in the past :)

But I don't mind... of course one has a tough time going back to something simple after tasting the goodies of all the new games we have.

Don't get me wrong, I love having a bout of the new Doom and the many other beautiful games I've purchased. But I do also love a bout of something nostalgic because I'm such an old fart ;)

Year of birth?
Shinigami Dec 12, 2016 @ 10:20am
1977, will be 40 next April... But I'm happy to say that I got my name in the credits of Unreal Tournament Rocket Arena, Serious Sam 1 and 2, and in Deus Ex for beta testing the dev tools :) (yep, makes me old indeed)

I hope you start again making Duke levels. Your workshop-map is good for the 90s. But dont expext many likes or anything from the new "players"..
