Megaton vs 20th Edition
Should I buy 20th Anniversary Edition, or fish around on the internet for Megaton Edition? Thanks.

Depends on what you're looking for. The main fraw of the Anniversary Edition is the new episode. As a "port" Megaton is probably more solid. Though either version can be used with a sourceport like EDuke32.

Ok thanks. I found out about Duke Nukem a few days ago through Bulletstorm. Not sure what to expect from either of them.

Finding Megaton is pretty troublesome, since Gearbox because of their greed, took down all other Duke games and versions of Duke Nukem 3D from various digital game-seller sites including Steam.

Well, Megaton doesn't have the 5th episode and all it's nice music...

In terms of polish, World Tour is better than Megaton. But it could've been even moreso if Gearbox had just taken the time to fix the rest of the glaring faults & bugs the game has. But as you know Gearbox has a bad habit of not bugfixing their games if they don't sell up to their standard. Which is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You should fix a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up game reguardless... because if you did it would sell more. Megaton might have alot of bugs that General Arcade just simply didn't have the time to fix. But it's overall more functional than World Tour, especially with it's functional, albeit picky multiplayer.

They should put back Duke Nukem Megaton Edition back on Steam

I've had experience (and own) most versions of Duke. This includes, but isn't limited to 1.3d's original release, the plutonium pak, the atomic edition release, the original kill-a-ton 3-cd edition, the steam Megaton edition, the steam Kill-A-Ton edition and of course the 20th Anniversary.

The Megaton edition has everything you'd expect if you were a classic duke fan. It's got the original three episodes, plus the additional "The Birth" episode - which is standard for Duke releases. On top of this, it has the three licensed expansions - Nuclear Winter, Duke Caribbean and Duke It Out In DC. These episodes are varying in quality and are very subjective. I love Duke Caribbean, but am not a huge fan of Nuclear Winter for example. Doing a search for videos of these episodes is probably the best way to gauge your experience - but if you love the game like I do, even the worst levels are still incredibly fun.

The Anniversary edition is a different story. Once again, it's got the original three episodes and the fourth "The Birth" episode as is standard, but that's where the similarities end. The first noticable problem is that it's lacking the licensed expansions - something that to fans of these would be a huge loss of content. That being said, there's a lot of new content too, the first being an entire new episode. Without going into too much spoiler-based detail, there are a host of new levels, most of which are bigger in scale than the original set. They're designed by the original level designers, there's a new end boss and the have new music tracks composed by one of the original composers. In terms of quality, I've found these levels to be far superior to the licensed expansions in quality - but whether or not that makes up for the lack of quantity is another thing.

As you can probably tell, it's a very subjective situation in terms of content. Your best bet is to look up videos and see which you'd prefer, or potentially buy both. The Megaton edition is not available in the steam store, but still up for purchase on certain marketplaces.

In terms of engine, the anniversary edition is a clear winner. Pressing the "c" key to change between the original engine and the new "true 3D" engine. At first from videos and screenshots, I didn't see the appeal of the new engine and was disappointed it wasn't something along the lines of the cancelled "Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded", but I fell in love with it almost immediately. The differences are subtle, but the lighting effects are greatly improved - making the classic levels feel so much more alive and putting a shine on nostalgia. The new engine also removes the vertigo effects of the classic engine when aiming vertically. If you're new to the game, the world warps a bit when aiming vertically as the engine was originally pseudo-3d for DOS and intended for arrow-key playback most of the time, not wasd / mouse. When using the new engine, it looks how you'd expect it to look. Additionally, all of Duke's speech has been re-recorded by the original voice actor in higher quality, removing the noticable aging quality from the original .voc files. This can be turned off and the original sound effects restored, should you not like it for whatever reason - as can the new engine.

There's quite a lot more in terms of differences, pros, cons, etc - but the anniversary edition revitalized my love for this game (not that I've ever NOT loved it). I've got Megaton set up with the original arrow-keys to move, a to jump control scheme and I've got the new one set up with the wasd / mouse control scheme you see in most modern first person shooters and it feels incredible to experience duke in a different way.

Once again, I'd recommend looking up videos and making your mind up yourself - nobody can tell you which one you'll prefer and at the core of it, you're getting the same basic four episodes either way and that's where the heart of duke will always lie. If it were up to me however and I had to purchase one after owning both, it wouldn't be a hard decision - I'd definitely get the Anniversary.

Yes. IIRC it didn't support it at launch, but was added in an update.
