Especially for the price of punishing players who actually are stuck?
Fortunately, actually getting stuck seems to be a very rare occurrence. I've spent about 100+ hours on this game and never used this feature once, and I'm sure many players would also never need to use it.
The unstuck action is just a free player death, with all the penalties.
It's certainly a far better alternative to resetting your entire save file and starting over due to what could otherwise be a permanent soft-lock.
I'm not sure how you can lose "hours" of progress by getting stuck, are you not taking stuff back to the ranch periodically? Or running out of storage?
It is annoying when you get stuck, don't disagree there, but for the amount of times it happens (can count them on one hand) it's not a big deal. It's good that feature is there at all to stop you being permanently stuck.
I just reached the glass desert and I got stuck there two times. After collecting a lot of the ressources and slimes I saw there the first time. So yes, it was hours of progress that I lost because of bugs in the game.
The argument "players will use it as a fast travel option" is a really weak one. Because the playerbase looses nothing if some players decide to "abuse" that function.
