Unlocking their ranch isn't worth it anyway. Because the area is in a separate "world" from your world, the zone doesn't run properly. Like, slime do not eat and drones do not work (last time I played... unless there was a patch that fixed it). Veg/fruit farm still works while you're away, so you could make use of that.
Also remember that drones can use the transport lockers to move garden produce out of the zones they are in. Just remember to water the drones. Or have storage silo they they fill with garden produce so they don't rot away that you can go and empty out for the main farm zone.
So yeah most of the farm extensions are worth it, The only case is if you don't want to use drones for those extra zones can it become a bit of a drag to manage and thus questionable to get/pay for them. So if you want to have more of a "exploration" gameplay run you can skip some of them after you get the lab & cave and put drones to the wilderness to hunt wild slime plorts instead and use the market extension and transport lockers to get that sweet plort money instead. That works too. It's up to you what kind of game do you want to do.
