Any slime you can capture can eat any other such slime's plorts, but the only slime that eats other slimes is the Tarr that is created when a largo eats a third plort type. Once they're largos, they eat no further plorts of their type, and are much better in general.

easy as 1-2-3:
slime, largo, tarr

Slimes produce plorts of their type. If there is a plort in front of them that is NOT their own type, they wil eat it and become a largo.

Largos are a combination of two types of slime; The type of slime it was and the type of plort it ate (doesnt matter wich way around). They are much more economic because they eat either food of their types and they produce BOTH plorts. Keep these isolated from any plorts that are not their own two types, else they will eat it and become a Tarr.

Tarr is an abomination that will kill your other slimes, so throw them into the ocean ASAP and clean up your plorts, because your slimes are eating plorts they shouldnt eat.

So I can only keep one type of slime in a corral

Usually you'll want to put two types into a corral because largos produce more plorts. It also makes producing difficult plorts easier: Combine a slime that you have the favorite food for with a slime that produces expensive plorts. Largos eat either their types favorite food and produce both plorts. This way you can feed them easier and get more plorts than trying to farm small slimes.

If with "one type of slime" you mean one type of Largo, then yes. Mixing it up more will result in Tarr destroying everything

Speaking as a novice, I haven't run into any slimes that will eat puddle plorts, or at least I haven't seen any. I did find a random tarr on top of one of my largo corrals that was next to a pond with puddle slimes in it, but none of the puddle slimes had been eaten so I don't know what happened.

Your clue was that literally all the hybrids that worked happened basically immediately upon contact with plorts, including when you just straight-up shot them in the face with your vac-gun.
